As soon as the autumn nights turn cool, the little katydids hiding in the foxtail grass start tuning their tiny string wings. They always wait for the roundest full moon to come out before starting their show. At first they are shy, only humming a couple of soft notes, but soon the little crickets from the next grass blade and the tiny crickets by the wall creep over to join in, forming a little impromptu band. Once, a little katydid got so lost in singing that it didn’t notice a kid holding a tiny flashlight standing right next to it. Instead of hiding, it turned its song up twice as loud, feeling so proud to finally have a special audience. It kept singing until the kid yawned and walked home, then flicked its antennae and finished its show with a big, happy smile. Well, I heard this story from my grandmother.
